WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHERE DO YOU LIVE MOST FREQUENTLY?

Alex:I was born in Luhansk on the east of Ukraine in times of USSR, but I was too little for remembering something from that times (USSR I mean) I finished education in Luhansk and went for Kharkiv and after for Kyiv. The longest time of my life I dwelt in Kyiv.

Vera Brenner[above photo]: I was born and raised in Kiev. During my life I have traveled a lot and saw a lot of beautiful cities in different countries in which would not mind to live, but my hometown – my real home, which I love.

  1. LIKE MOST MUSCISIANS THEY OFTEN COME FROM MUSICAL FAMILIES—TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND CHILDHOOD—WHEN WERE YOU INSPIRED BY MUSIC?

Alex:My family was not musical. No any connections with world of classical or folk or popular music.

Vera Brenner: My parents are not related to music. When I was a child, I spent the most time with my grandmother. And it was she who took me to the choir when I was 4 years old. Since then, music has become an important part of my life.

Eugene Shtakal: My parents aren’t musicians, but love for music I inherited from my father, who was a great fan of rock music.

  1. WHO WERE YOUR MUSIC HEROES WHEN YOU WERE A TEENAGER—DO YOU HAVE NEW HEROES NOW?

Alex:My great music heroes is the In Extremo and Subway to Sally. I think it will be for all time. But their music is sounding too dark. I try to play music similar to In Extremo but with more light in sound. I really love most of works of Irish band Cruachan and it was a great honor for me to record some bagpipes for their last albums. Also I love heroic metal as Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Freedom Call. All this band with me from teen-age. Also I love bands of old rock-music as The Beatles, The Doors, Jethro Tull. And finally I love russian band with great lyrics as Aquarium, Kino, Picnik, Orgia Pravednikov.

From new bands i love Polish band Oberschlesien.

Vera Brenner: As a teenager, I loved different rock music, and for me the characters were Sully Erna (Godsmack), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Jonathan Davis (Korn). Now I still love their music. But now I like more traditional folk music. Galicia and Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia – it is close to me now.

Eugene Shtakal: When I was teenager I listened to my father’s favorite metal bands like Nazareth, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Uriah Heep etc. Now I listen to different kinds of music, trying to be aware about new music styles and bands.

  1. WHEN DID YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH BAGPIPES?

Alex:In 2000 or 1999 i listened to heroic metal band Blind Guardian with the songs about fantasy of magic, swords and science. And in one song they used bagpipes and it made some my interest for this instrument. But after I opened for myself In Extremo and their music with parts of punk-rock with bagpipes in mystical esthetics of medieval, Carl Orff and fantasy was the greatest rock-band I heard. I decide to play same music. And I thought that its more easy to find guitar and drums player then bagpiper so I had to be bagpiper by myself.

It was hard in that time in Luhansk because internet was not in every house, and it was too less true information about bagpipes and how to get them.

Vera Brenner: I heard the bagpipes when I was 9 years old, and it was love at first sight. Many years later, I decided to learn to play this wonderful instrument. I was inspired by modern pipers from all the world. And now playing the bagpipe is as important as the singing for me.

  1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BAND MEMBERS, ARE THEY ALL “ORIGINAL MEMBERS”, OR THEY CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?

Alex: All members of the band was changed over the years except me. It wasn’t my choice i just stayed and did my work. It was harder for other members because project is not too for trade. Our music is not popular in Ukraine in media format and its normaly. There are more not too popular kinds of music which stay out of radio and tv in Ukraine.

Vera Brenner: I knew about the FRAM before to join. I became a member in 2011. Time flies fast!

  1. HOW IS YOUR POPULARITY GROWING IN UKRAINE AND THE WORLD?

Alex:Today there is no way to popularity for this music in Ukraine. We play music with medieval esthetic in country which have not medieval in oficial discourse. And its no way for us to be a part of discourse in Ukraine today. So we live in sector of exotic entertaiment.

I think we more popular in Belarus where medieval is the part of national history or we maybe more popular in Russia but we are not in Russia already.

People of world can find our music in Internet but its too difficult to organize show of the band which need visas to come and have not any local support.

Also i give CDs for donation when I play on the streets and its popular. So I`m selling and giving for donation so many CDs as i only can by myself.

  1. HOW MANY ALBUMS DO YOU HAVE AND WHERE CAN OUR MEMBERS FIND THEM AND BUY THEM?

Alex:We have two albums and some tracks without albums. People can find it in vk or on soundcloud and also they can find me on the street and got СD for donation.

  1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR MUSICAL STYLE—BECAUSE IT IS RATHER UNIQUE—AND UKRAINE HAS THE MOST UNIQUE ARTISTIC COMMUNITY IN MY OPNION

Alex:We play in style of medieval-celtic rock similar to In Extremo,Subway to Sally, Tanzwut, Mago de Oz, Skyclad, and other. We are just only one in Ukraine.

  1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PERSONALL LIFE

Alex: I`m married.

Vera Brenner: Happily Married. Harmony and support in the family helps to create and to give good energy to people who listen to my music when I play the bagpipes or singing. The inner world can change the world around you!
